The water pump with the two outlet pipes at Hamngatan 8 in Mörbylånga was manufactured by the 'Berliner Pumpenfabrik' sometime between 1906 and 1929 (the period when the pump factory was a public limited company).

The pump was used by the fire brigade to transport large quantities of seawater to extinguish fires in the Baltic Sea via a simple buried pipe some 65 m long. The foundation of the pump, an inspection cover and the approach for the pipeline were cast in concrete and are still visible today.

The fire brigade used seawater as the drinking water on the island was too precious to waste. The pump is a few meters west of the road and could still pump water from the Baltic Sea.
