"Desde el siglo XIV o XV es invocada en Onil la Santísima Virgen como consuelo y salud de los enfermos.
El primer hecho milagroso del que se tiene conocimiento en nuestros días se remonta a la segunda mitad del siglo XIV o principios del siglo XV.
Dos jóvenes hermanos Lucas y Marcos Payà hijos de la villa de Onil. Se dedicaban al cultivo del campo y se encontraban realizando sus tareas en un collado que se ve a las afueras de Onil, denominado «Fontalbres. Uno de los hermanos hirió involuntariamente de muerte al otro al levantar su azada y golpear en la cabeza a su hermano, al que no había visto, ya que se encontraba detrás de él.
Al acercarse a su hermano y ver que este había dejado de vivir se incó de rodillas y pidió perdón al Señor por el daño que había causado a su hermano. Después ruega con gran devoción a la Santísima Virgen, que le ayude en este trance, prometiéndole que si su hermano volvía a la vida, levantaría una ermita, cerca de Onil, y colocaría en ella, la Sagrada "Imagen de la Santísima Virgen" que había heredado de sus padres, para que recibiera culto de sus moradores.
Tan pronto como terminó de hacer su promesa, el consternado hermano ve con asombro como su hermano resucita y llenos de gozo, ambos se ponen de rodillas y juntos dan gracias al Señor por la gracia que acaba de concederles por la intercesión de la Santísima Virgen. Ambos se dirigen a su casa refiriendo a cuantos encuentran lo ocurrido.
Así, pronto y tal como habían prometido levantan la ermita al oeste del pueblo, en un paraje conocido como Les Eres, donde sigue ubicada en la actualidad. En el pueblo crecen el amor y el cariño a la Virgen.
Corría año 1.648 reinando Felipe IV, la peste apareciera en esta comarca, La Villa de Onil se vio invadida por tan terrible azote.
Agobiado todo el Consejo de la Villa, estudian una formula milagrosa que les libre del mal. La noche del 22 de abril 1.648, cinco de ellos, por separado creen haber concebido un sueño por el que se les aconsejaba recurrir a la Virgen. “Es evidente” dijo la Corporación: «que Ella quiere estar con nosotros en estos momentos difíciles» y al momento pusieron en obra sus sueños, que consistían llevar en procesión la sagrada imagen de Maria desde su ermita a la Villa, recorriendo todas las calles de esta y colocándola luego en la iglesia parroquial, para allí rendirle culto y dirigirle continuas oraciones hasta conseguir la gracia que se deseaba.
En el año 1.743, el 7 de diciembre, el Santo Pontífice Benedicto XIV declaró oficialmente a la Virgen de la Salud como Patrona de Onil.
Se realizó la Coronación Canónica 23 abril 1948 por el Excmo. Y Rvdmo. Sr. D, Marcelino Olaechea Loizaga, Arzobispo de Valencia con motivo del tercer centenario del milagro de la peste.
Lo más bello y hermoso de esta historia es que cada 23 de Abril, fetejamos junto a nuetra Virgen de la salut.

"Since the 14th or 15th century, the Blessed Virgin has been invoked in Onil as consolation and health for the sick.
The first miraculous event that is known today dates back to the second half of the 14th century or the beginning of the 15th century.
Two young brothers Lucas and Marcos Payà, sons of the town of Onil. Then he prayed with great devotion to the Blessed Virgin to help him in this situation, promising that if his brother came back to life, he would build a hermitage near Onil and place in it the Sacred "Image of the Blessed Virgin" that he had inherited from his parents, so that he would receive worship from his inhabitants.
As soon as he finished making his promise, the dismayed brother watches in astonishment as his brother is resurrected and filled with joy, both kneel down and together give thanks to the Lord for the grace he has just granted them through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin. Both go home referring to how many find what happened.
Thus, soon and as they had promised, they built the hermitage to the west of the town, in a place known as Les Eres, where it is still located today. In the town, love and affection for the Virgin grow.
It was the year 1648, reigning Felipe IV, the plague appeared in this region, La Villa de Onil was invaded by such a terrible scourge.
Overwhelmed by the entire Town Council, they study a miraculous formula that frees them from evil. On the night of April 22, 1648, five of them separately believe they had conceived a dream in which they were advised to turn to the Virgin. "It is evident" said the Corporation: "that She wants to be with us in these difficult moments" and immediately they put their dreams into action, which consisted of taking the sacred image of Mary in procession from her hermitage to the Villa, going through all the streets of this and then placing it in the parish church, to worship it there and direct continuous prayers until obtaining the grace that was desired.
In the year 1743, on December 7, the Holy Pontiff Benedict XIV officially declared the Virgen de la Salud as Patron Saint of Onil.
The Canonical Coronation was held on April 23, 1948 by the Hon. And Rvdmo. Mr. D, Marcelino Olaechea Loizaga, Archbishop of Valencia on the occasion of the third centenary of the miracle of the plague.
The most beautiful and beautiful thing about this story is that every April 23, we celebrate with our Virgin of Health.
