"Around 1490, Muro had a church, San Juan Bautista, in the center of the old town and a mosque in the square of Santo Tomás. This primitive church had two access doors, one facing the Plaça de l 'Esglesia and the other was called La de Dalt.
The main altar was attached to the wall that adjoins Calle del Carmen, called Carrer Calalí at that time.
Its reduced dimensions forced repeated extensions, highlighting those carried out in the years 1607 and 1791 and 1837. To carry out the latter, several adjoining houses were purchased, giving rise to the current spacious temple.

The primitive church was a Renaissance-style building, with a single vaulted nave, four chapels on each side, and two sacristies, between which stood the main altar. The arches were made of brick and the corners and main portal were made of carved stone with moldings.

The Parochial Church of San Juan Bautista of rectangular plant, consists of three naves. The main nave is larger than the two lateral ones, these with attached chapels. This temple, begun in 1827, would be inaugurated in 1837, being its architect Fray Vicente Cuenca.
As for the painting of the altarpiece, it was carried out during the years 1604 to 1607, being its author Jerónimo Rodríguez de Espinosa, helped by Jaime Terol as decorator. They made up a total set of nine tables, four of which are unaccounted for and the remaining five are currently in the Diocesan Museum of Valencia, where they were transferred in 1923, being in a poor state of conservation, due in part to to the fire suffered by the Archbishop's Palace during the civil war.
There is a dome without a drum, made of blue and white tiles, with a large lantern, characterized by oval lighting holes and by the outer gallery that surrounds it.
The plan, of a Latin cross, is rectangular, so that the Communion chapel and the sacristy are located on both sides of the presbytery. The main nave has three sections and is covered with a barrel vault.
The side chapels are covered with hollow vaults connected by arches of the same size as those that fall on the nave, so that they appear to be side naves.
A continuous gallery appears on the architrave. The side chapels are covered with vaults connected by arches of the same size as those that fall on the nave so that they appear to be side naves. In the vaults and pendentives, the frescoes by the painter M. Parra, which narrate the life of San Juan, are of interest".
