The machine is the Flywheel, Crank and Drive-Pulley of Stone Gang-Saw. Painted black, it was created by the F.R. Patch Manufacturing Company of Rutland, Vermont. The machine was used for cutting stone and marble, and is a fitting spot considering the amount of preserved marble sculptures here in the gardens.
