La Pía Unión de la Mare de Déu del Miracle de Cocentaina (Alicante) organizó una peregrinación mariana para depositar esta imagen en Torreciudad, el día 23 de octubre de 2005.
La localidad alicantina de Cocentaina conmemora cada 19 de abril el “Milagro de las lágrimas” en honor a los hechos ocurridos en el primer cuarto del siglo XVI, cuando la imagen de la Virgen del Milagro lloró 27 lágrimas. Según la tradición, “el 19 de abril de 1520, el icono bizantino de la Virgen Inmaculada que presidía la capilla de San Antonio Abad, en el Palacio Condal, lloró lágrimas de sangre mientras el sacerdote Mossén Onofre celebraba la eucaristía y en tiempos de peste, cuando asolaba la comarca. Desde entonces, la virgen es la patrona del municipio, donde le ofrendan una procesión y traslado de la imagen de la Mare de Déu, entre otros actos.

“Yo celebraba la dicha Misa de la Navidad de la Sacratísima Virgen María […] y habiendo asumido el Cuerpo Precioso de Nuestro Redentor Jesucristo en la última post-comunio, que fue de Conceptione Virginis Mariae, miré la dicha imagen de la Sacratísima Virgen María, que estaba con la cara cubierta por un velo de hilo y seda. Vi la cara de la dicha imagen cubierta toda de sudor. Entonces me paré y miré mejor qué era”, declaró bajo juramento el sacerdote, Onofre Zatorre, hombre culto («Bachiler en Artes»). El sacerdote esperó a que terminase la misa. “Y tomé entonces la dicha imagen y levanté el velo para mirar mejor ese sudor, cuyo velo estaba sobre la dicha imagen todo cosido, y rompí el velo en presencia del dicho Faxardo, y con el cuarto dedo de la mano izquierda toqué una gota de sudor, que estaba bajo el ojo izquierdo, y la dicha gota se extendió a modo de señal del dedo, y queda el vestigio del dedo en la cara de la imagen”, especifica el acta notarial."
La imagen de la Virgen llegó a Cocentaina en 1450 y fue un regalo del papa Nicolás V a Eiximén Roís de Corella, que había luchado en las guerras de Italia y acababa de ser nombrado conde por el rey aragonés Alfonso el Magnánimo. La depositó, como un preciado tesoro en la capilla del Palacio. La Mare de Déu está custodiada por la comunidad de franciscanas clarisas, tal y como quiso la IX condesa de Cocentaina, quien no llegó a ver su deseo cumplido pero que dejó en herencia esa gran devoción a la Virgen y su descendencia consiguió fundar el Monasterio de Nuestra Señora del Milagro de Cocentaina en 1654. Se habilitó como habitación para las monjas que vinieron de Granada unas estancias en el mismo palacio condal y posteriormente se construyó la iglesia, ya que la capilla del palacio no podía albergar a toda la gente que venía a rezar a la Virgen.

The Alicante town of Cocentaina commemorates every April 19 the "Miracle of Tears" in honor of the events that occurred in the first quarter of the 16th century, when the image of the Virgin of the Miracle wept 27 tears. According to tradition, "on April 19, 1520, the Byzantine icon of the Immaculate Virgin that presided over the chapel of San Antonio Abad, in the Palacio Condal, wept tears of blood while the priest Mossén Onofre celebrated the Eucharist and in times of plague , when it devastated the region. “I was celebrating the said Christmas Mass of the Most Sacred Virgin Mary [...] and having assumed the Precious Body of Our Redeemer Jesus Christ in the last post-communion, which was of Conceptione Virginis Mariae, I looked at the said image of the Most Sacred Virgin Mary , whose face was covered by a veil of thread and silk. I saw the face of said image covered all with sweat. So I stopped and took a better look at what it was”, declared under oath the priest, Onofre Zatorre, a cultured man (“Bachiler in Arts”). The priest waited for the mass to end. “And then I took the said image and raised the veil to better see that sweat, whose veil was all sewn on the said image, and I tore the veil in the presence of the said Faxardo, and with the fourth finger of my left hand I touched a drop of sweat, which was under the left eye, and the said drop spread as a sign of the finger, and the vestige of the finger remains on the face of the image ”, specifies the notarial deed."
The image of the Virgin arrived in Cocentaina in 1450 and was a gift from Pope Nicholas V to Eiximén Roís de Corella, who had fought in the wars in Italy and had just been named count by the Aragonese king Alfonso the Magnanimous. He deposited it, like a precious treasure, in the Palace chapel. La Mare de Déu is guarded by the community of Poor Clare Franciscans, just as the IX Countess of Cocentaina wanted, who did not see her wish fulfilled but left her great devotion to the Virgin and her descendants managed to found the Monastery of Nuestra Señora del Milagro de Cocentaina in 1654. Some rooms in the same county palace were set up as a room for the nuns who came from Granada and later the church was built, since the palace chapel could not accommodate all the people who came to pray to the Virgin".
