The text on the plaque reads

DE:
Bundsenkapelle

EN:
Bundsenkapelle

The cemetery chapel erected in 1813, a major work of Danish classicism, was designed by architect Axel Bundsen (1768-1832) based on the model of an antique gate building. The chapel is a gateway on the way from life to the realm of death.

Coming from the north, the funeral procession entered the chapel through the double wing gate. Inside, the mourners gathered in the rotunda, a round sliding grate was closed: the circle of life was closed. After the mourners, the sliding gate and the gate to the cemetery on the south side were opened, and the funeral procession proceeded to the grave.

The square central building, crowned by a cupola, is flanked by two side extensions. All the necessary functions, such as the chapel room, apartment for the cemetery keeper, morgue, equipment room and wagon shed were combined here. The dome follows the model of the ancient Roman pantheon.
