Fue un hombre que se sublevó contra su cuñado, recibiendo en sus dominios al hermano bastardo del rey, el pretendiente D. Enrique de Trastamara, con la hermana del cual se casó. Sin embargo, al estallar la guerra abierta entre ambos hermanos (Pedro y Enrique), al principio, se negó a participar en ella no queriendo enfrentarse al rey Pedro I. Llegó a más: se pasó al servicio de este rey por lo que recibió el título de Conde de Trastamara. Luchó en Granada y en la frontera de Aragón, y acabó cayendo prisionero de Enrique, en Montiel. El que luego fuera rey, lo trató con benignidad, pero acabó traicionando a Enrique II, pasándose a los portugueses e intentando sublevar a Galicia contra el nuevo monarca. Derrotado, se refugió en Portugal desde donde pasó a Inglaterra, nación en la que murió. Por sus hechos, no cabe duda de que este personaje fue lo que podríamos denominar modernamente como un político sumamente intrigante.
