Over the years, a large variety of Madonna and Child-type paintings have appeared on U.S. traditional Christmas stamps. Many of these are from the collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, but many are also from other museums or collections. For the year 1994, the U.S. Postal Service chose this painting of a plump baby Jesus placing a garland of roses on Mary’s head by Bolognese artist Elisabetta Sirani. Sirani completed the painting in 1663, just two years before her untimely death at the age of 27.
