The sphere is the work of Arnaldo Pomodoro, a sculptor and set designer born in Romagna in 1926, who gave it to John Paul II in 1990. Made of bronze, through a "break" it shows a sphere inside another and various gears , a metaphor, apparently, for the destruction caused by aerial bombardments in his hometown during World War II. As if the sculpture weren't peculiar enough, it also has movement, turning on itself when pushed.
