La esfera es obra de Arnaldo Pomodoro, un escultor y escenógrafo nacido en la Romaña en 1926, quien se la regaló a Juan Pablo II en 1990. Realizada en bronce, a través de una «rotura» muestra una esfera dentro de otra y diversos engranajes, metáfora, al parecer, de la destrucción que causaron los bombardeos aéreos en su localidad natal durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. The sphere is the work of Arnaldo Pomodoro, a sculptor and set designer born in Romagna in 1926, who gave it to John Paul II in 1990. Made of bronze, through a "break" it shows a sphere inside another and various gears , a metaphor, apparently, for the destruction caused by aerial bombardments in his hometown during World War II. As if the sculpture weren't peculiar enough, it also has movement, turning on itself when pushed.
