The Argentine Republic maintains diplomatic relations with the Holy See since 1857. He was the first Argentine Constitutional President, Mr. Justo José de Urquiza, who had the high honor of exchanging diplomatic representatives with His Holiness Pius IX, inaugurating a very rich and positive direct relationship between our country and the Holy See, which until then had always been mediated, first via Spain and, already in period independently, through Brazil.

The first Argentine representative was Mr. Juan Bautista Alberdi, the main inspirer of the constitutional text of 1853 who was designated "Extraordinary Envoy and Plenipotentiary Minister near Pius IX", by decree of April 18, 1857, and in turn appointed Benito Filippani as his confidential agent in Rome.

The Embassy is accredited to the Holy See and has its diplomatic office and residence of the Ambassador in the city of Rome. Its functions are to represent the Argentine Republic, develop bilateral and cultural relations, explore areas of common interest that allow the achievement of Argentine foreign policy objectives, and foster friendship ties with the Holy See.

In addition, the Argentine Embassy before the Holy See can legalize official documentation from Catholic Universities and Vatican Institutions, based on the prior certification issued by said Universities or Study Centers (authenticated by the Congregation for Catholic Education) and Vatican Institutions or Institutes. Religious and, in any case, with the official seal and signature of the Secretary of State.
