On the Rideau Canal, the Burritts Rapids Lock was completed in 1830. Before the canal was built, surveyors from the Ordnance Department placed stone markers to identify ordnance property alongside the Rideau Canal. This stone marker can be identified by the broad arrow chiseled on a vertical face. The broad arrow was the Ordnance Department symbol.

The crown lands inside the Ordnance Boundary Line were and are lands dedicated to the construction and maintenance of the Rideau Canal. Ordnance Boundary Stone (OBS) VIII and many other stones surviving from the 1830s mark that boundary line.

Between the swing bridge at Burritts Rapids and lock 17, marker OBS VIII is near the south shore of the Rideau Canal, close to the water feature once known as The Catchall. OBS VIII is close to the north edge of the River Road at its intersection with the sideroad (now Burritts Rapids Road) which separates lots 5 and 6, concession I, Oxford-on-Rideau township (now North Grenville).
