EN: The House of Slaves (French: Maison des Esclaves) is a museum and monument to the Atlantic slave trade on the small island of Gorée, 3 km off the coast of the city of Dakar, Senegal. Its museum, opened in 1962 and managed until his death in 2009 by Boubacar Joseph Ndiaye, is said to commemorate the final departure point of slaves from Africa. Historians differ on how many, or if all, African slaves actually passed through this building, as well as the relative importance of Gorée Island as a point of the Atlantic slave trade, but visitors from Africa, Europe and the Americas, along with world leaders, hold it up as an important place to remember the human cost of African slavery.[
