Lone Butte Mesa is located 13 km southeast of 100 Mile House. The flat-topped hill is a low, steep-sided mesa butte or volcanic plug found in central British Columbia. It is composed of columnar basalt that formed within a prehistoric volcano six million years ago. The vertical structure of Lone Butte Mesa forms a prominent monument that rises more than 50m above the surrounding lowlands of the Cariboo Plateau. You will notice at least 2 communication towers on the top. A parking lot can be found near the base of the butte at a trailhead that leads to the top of the mesa! There are no cairns or monuments at the top of the Butte.

The nearby community of Lone Butte was once the Cariboo Region’s largest town and a busy centre for the ranchers who settled in the area from the early 1900s to the 1950s. At that time, Lone Butte was the largest town in the region, with stockyards, lumber mills and hotels.
