The marker is located in front of the Kings Landing historic Settlement Visitor Centre.
During the latter half of the 19th and into the early part of the 20th centuries the UK and Canadian governments had a program in place that saw thousands of orphaned and disadvantaged children moved from the British Isles and resettled in Canada and other British Empire locations, with the hope of better lives.
Estimates of around 100,000 children were placed with families in the Maritimes, Ontario and Quebec. Most were sent to farming families where the boys were put to work in the fields and the girls were used as domestics.
The marker reads
ENGLAND, WALES, SCOTLAND AND IRELAND
Dedicated by the Province of New Brunswick in the Year of Our Lord 2013 in the memory of our British Home Children who emmigrated (sic) to our province from 1869 until the early 1930's. Long may we remember their many struggles, triumphs and contributions that have so deeply enriched our land.
"You have within you everything need to deal with whatever difficulties that may confront you."
The text is also in French, reflecting New Brunswick's official bilingual status.
