There are at least ten known historical and archeological sites that are located in the vicinity of Southeast Intracoastal Waterway Park. These sites contain food waste piles, known as shell middens, which are scattered with artifacts that date between the Orange Period (4000-1000 BCE) and St. Johns Period (500 BCE-c.1600 CE). Shellfish harvesting was very important for the native Timucua way of life before European arrival to northeast Florida. Many Timucuan villages were located near the banks of the Matanzas River and evidence of their existence is told through the presence of shell middens.
