The coastal and estuarine ecosystem of the Matanzas River are rich in diversity. Natural communities consist of coastal scrub oak and saltwater marsh. The upland portions consist of sand live oak, myrtle oak wax myrtle, saw palmetto, yaupon holly, saltbush and bracken fern. The salt marsh and estuarine communities at the park are part of a much larger estuarine system in southern St. Johns County that provides habitat to a wide variety of wildlife. Within an estuary, fresh water streams flow into the saline Intracoastal Waterway where the river's waters function as a nursery for the young of many species and provides them shelter to mature.
