Early Settlers were known as Boomers, or Boomer Sooners since they "jumped the gun" on settling land in Oklahoma.
These settlers has built cabins and dugouts and called their settlement Stillwater on Dec 12, 1884. They were led by William Couch, a early leader in Stillwater. As one of the founders of Stillwater Couch Park the largest recreational park in Stillwater is named after him.
Eventually they were forced to surrender as the US Calvary was clearing out boomers to prepare for the opening of lands in 1885. The website link below gives more info into the history of Wm. Couch and David Payne who Payne County is named for.
This marker erected by Boy Scout Troop 14 marks the site where their Homesteads were located in 1884
