"On August 27, 2018, the Bruges police went to the park near the Smedenpoort in Bruges. Three teenagers told how they sat on a bench and were approached by two men. They asked them to stand up and empty their pockets. “We are from the undercover police”, the men are said to have introduced themselves. The teens emptied their pockets and put their things on the couch. The self-declared agents then allegedly took a wallet and multimedia earphones from two of them respectively. The police immediately launched a search in the area. Two suspects were arrested a short distance away. RT (26) from Assebroek and MP (33) from Sint-Kruis admittedly had no stolen items in their pocket. The officers did find a photo of an identity card on the latter's mobile phone.
The public prosecutor demanded a strict, effective punishment for both men. However, RT asked for an acquittal. According to his lawyer Koen Blomme, there was no theft. “My client saw those youths taking drugs in the park,” he explained. “He was against that and decided to speak to them. He never pretended to be a cop or stole anything. Those missing things have never even been found anywhere.”
MP, on the other hand, admitted that he pretended to be an undercover agent. He also denied the theft. “My client is a user himself, but says he is absolutely against drugs. Especially for minors. He consequently accosted them and posed as a cop to impress. That was also the case with the first facts at the station.” Judgment on March 10."
