The Maori honoured those who fought in the First World War at this location by erecting an Maori Totem in their name.

"Op het kasteeldomein in Zonnebeke is vanmorgen een grote Maori-totem ingehuldigd door de Maori’s.
Het monument is een eerbetoon aan hun voorouders die hier in de Eerste Wereldoorlog gevochten hebben en het leven lieten.
De totem is 8 meter hoog en weegt 6 ton. Het monument staat symbool voor de gemeenschappelijke geschiedenis die ons land en Nieuw-Zeeland delen. De ene kant van het sculptuur stelt de oorlog voor en is gericht naar de slagvelden rond Passendale. De andere kant stelt de mensen voor die in het thuisland gebleven zijn.
De herdenkingstotem werd gemaakt door meester-houtsnijders en studenten van een kunstacademie van een inheemse houtsoort, die meer dan 4.500 jaar oud is."

"A large Maori totem was inaugurated by the Maoris this morning at the castle grounds in Zonnebeke.
The monument is a tribute to their ancestors who fought here in the First World War and lost their lives.
The totem is 8 meters high and weighs 6 tons. The monument symbolizes the common history that our country and New Zealand share. One side of the sculpture represents the war and faces the battlefields around Passchendaele. The other side represents the people who have remained in the homeland.
The memorial totem was made by master carvers and art school students from a native wood, which is more than 4,500 years old."
