This locomotive was built in 1903 at Chicago, Burlington & Quincy’s Havelock shops, now part of Lincoln, NE. It was built (as No. 40) specifically for the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad which, at that time, was a wholly owned subsidiary of the CB&Q. The ten-wheeler was part of a group of 24 delivered to the B&MR between the years 1901 and 1904 to be used in express passenger service. About a year after its delivery, the B&MR was completely absorbed into the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy and No. 40 became CB&Q No. 719.

Alliance, Nebraska was a railroad town from the get-go. The Alliance Division of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy RR covered western Nebraska, eastern Wyoming and parts of Colorado, Montana and South Dakota. Engine 719 spent much of its useful life in this area, first in passenger service and later pulling light freight. After it was retired in the early 1950s, it was donated to the city of Alliance where it’s been placed on display.

The old turn-of-the-century steam locomotive may be reminiscent of Alliance’s past, but railroading is still alive and well here. BNSF (CB&Q’s successor) still maintains a railyard here with most of the trains hauling coal out of Wyoming’s Powder River Basin.
