With a dam 310 meters long, the Oder reservoir primarily provides flood protection for the region around Bad Lauterberg and can store up to 30.6 million m³ of water. In addition to flood protection, the dam also releases water to the lower reaches of the Oder River during low water elevation, thus protecting flora and fauna in the river habitat.
In addition, the power plant converts hydropower into energy in an environmentally friendly manner, generating around 6.6 million kilowatt hours of blue electricity annually. Drinking water is not produced at the Odertalspeme.
