La iglesia de San Biagio de Mercato (o de Mercatello ) es una iglesia desconsagrada de Roma, en el barrio de Campitelli , situada al pie de la escalera de Aracoeli, en el lado derecho del Vittoriano .
De esta antigua iglesia solo se conocía el título, pero no la ubicación exacta. Esto hasta los años veinte del siglo XX , cuando, para la disposición de la plaza debajo del Campidoglio , se decidió desmantelar la iglesia de Santa Rita da Cascia en Campitelli para reconstruirla a lo largo de via del Mare (hoy via del Teatro Marcello); el derribo del edificio sacó a la luz los restos de una ínsula romana perfectamente conservada , sobre la que se había construido el templo románico en la Edad Media. Ciertamente fue consagrada antes de 1192 , como se menciona en el Catálogo de Cencio Camerario de este período. Su construcción es atribuible a la familia Boccabella, de la que varias lápidas deldel siglo XI se conservan en lo que hoy queda del edificio.
El nombre de la iglesia hace referencia al hecho de que en la Edad Media se celebraba el mercado de la ciudad frente a la iglesia. Del edificio sagrado hoy quedan el ábside y un fresco (el Descendimiento de Cristo entre las lágrimas de la Virgen y San Juan del siglo XIV ), y el pequeño campanario románico, construido directamente sobre las estructuras romanas. The church of San Biagio de Mercato (or of Mercatello) is a deconsecrated church in Rome, in the Campitelli neighborhood, located at the foot of the Aracoeli staircase, on the right side of the Vittoriano.
Of this old church, only the title was known, but not the exact location. The church of Santa Rita da Cascia in Campitelli was built on the site of the old medieval building in the middle of the 17th century.
