[EN] The Spanish Constitution of 1978 is the supreme norm of our legal system and promulgates the equality of Spaniards, as we can see in its Article 14:

Spaniards are equals before the law, without any discrimination based on birth, race, sex, religion, opinion or any other personal or social condition or circumstance.

“The Monument to the Spanish Constitution of 1978 is a robust yet minimalist construction, located in the Garden of Fine Arts, between the side of Paseo de la Castellana and the National Museum of Natural Sciences.

It is a complex cubic piece 5 meters on each side with a reinforced concrete structure. What we see on the outside is a coating of white marble slabs from Macael (Almería). This exterior patina makes it more attractive and stately.

Its interior is empty and its visible faces are pyramided inwards, with steps at the bottom. In the upper edges we can read, in Spanish, two mottos: "The people of Madrid" and "To the Constitution of 1978".

The monument to the Spanish Constitution of 1978 was inaugurated in 1982 when Enrique Tierno Galván was mayor of the city. That same year, a public contest had been called to pay homage to the legal norm that gave way to a new political era in Spain. The competition jury was made up of renowned sculptors and architects.

The contest was won by the architect Miguel Ángel Ruiz Larrea with a project to build a sober and minimalist sculpture. The aim was to evoke an idea of openness and rationality. According to the author himself, the monument wants to symbolize something original and fundamental, as well as the presence of the human spirit and the dignity of the path of men and women within the framework of the Constitution.

The work invites the citizen to participate in it, since he can enter the cube and contemplate its opening towards the four cardinal points. It is not uncommon to see people sitting quietly on its steps, which has a lot of symbolism.”
