This war memorial commemorates the fallen of the small Fife coastal communities of Elie and Earlsferry, two villages on the Firth of Forth coast that are joined together to form a small town. The memorial stands on the corner of Park Place and Main Street forming the south-west wall of Elie Parish Churchyard. It was designed by H. Tarbolton Esq. of Edinburgh and built by contractors, J. Pert & Son of Montrose at a cost of £648 3/-10d, after this amount was raised by the memorial committee set up to fund a memorial after the Great War.
The memorial was unveiled by Miss E.F. Scott of The Castle at Elie, and dedicated by the Rev. Mr Armstrong of Kilconquhar on April 24th 1921 at a well attended ceremony.
The memorial forms curved stone block on the corner site and includes balustrades and benches, with square pillars at each end topped by stone globes. A small relief of a cross stands above surrounded by a wreath and ribbon. Above the main tablet featuring the names is the inscription
'TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM ELIE & EARLSFERRY WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR'
Underneath is the following:
'THEY DID THEIR STERN DUTY AND DIED GREATLY IN THEIR DOING OF IT AND IN OUR HEARTS THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'
On the large central stone tablet are stated 34 names with rank and unit, and unusually also professions.
