Currently it functions as a food market , although it has been a hat factory, prison, as well as the town hall of the Córdoba City Council .
History
During the 16th century there was an expansion in this area, for which reason the corregidor of Córdoba Juan Gaitán de Ayala wanted to move the prison and town hall from Comedias street (currently Velázquez Bosco street) to the area, building a new building. Said request was approved by Royal Provision on September 1, 1583. The works were carried out in a period of about three years, in which the transfer of prisoners to the new jail is recorded, the architect in charge of them being the Cordovan Juan de Ochoa , who also carried out other works in the city such as the dome of the Mosque-Cathedral and the portal of the Viana Palace. It housed a large balcony that allowed great visibility towards the shows that were held in the square.
It was used as the corregidor's house until the beginning of the 18th century, when it was transferred to Capitulares street, while the municipal jail continued in place until 1822, when the prisoners were transferred to the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos . During the War of Independence it was a military barracks . In 1845 the building was acquired by the businessman José Sánchez Peña for the creation of his hat factory, the first company that used a steam engine in the city. The factory itself was located on the ground floor of the building, while the upper floor was inhabited by the workers.
After the factory closed in 1885, the Córdoba City Council allowed the sale of meat a year later, while it acquired the name of Mercado de Sánchez Peña in 1887, already as a food market. It was dedicated to the Cordoba businessman that gives it its name, new accesses were opened to facilitate transit and 87 sales points were installed to the public. Currently, the ground floor continues to function as a market, while the upper floor houses a civic center .
Structure
Its central courtyard still houses the layout of Juan de Ochoa in the 16th century , in a mannerist style , sober and without ornaments. Its two floors are open by semicircular arches on Tuscan columns . The large balcony that presided over the façade was transferred in the mid- 19th century to the Huerta La Favorita or de Morales once it became a hat factory. On its main canvas it housed the inscription:
ES: PHILIPO SECUNDO REGE POTENTISIMO URBIS PRAEFECTO IOANNE GAETANO AB AYALA PRO CORDUBENSIBUS FACIENDUM CURAVIT ANNO DOMINI - MDLXXXVI
EN: PHILIPP SECOND KING, THE MOST POWERFUL GOVERNOR OF THE CITY, IOANNE GAETANO OF AYALA PROVIDED FOR THE CORDUBIANS IN THE YEAR OF THE DOMINI - 1886
