The Kiowa on display is one of 75 purchased by the Canadian Armed Forces to support training and combat operations, primarily for the Canadian Army.

At CFB Gagetown, the helicopter type was flown by 403 Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force in support of field artillery and infantry operations, by acting as an airborne spotting platform.

422 Sqn was the Observer training Squadron on the Base. To that end, this display is dedicated to the Crew and passenger of Kiowa 136265, which crashed in NFLD in 1975, killing all three on board.

The crew consisted of 1 pilot and an Observer.

Kiowa 136216 was delivered to the CF in 1971. It initially saw service as an initial helicopter trainer with 3 CFFTS (Canadian Forces Flying Training School) at CFB Portage La Prairie, MB. After the CF acquired Bee Jet Ranger helicopters for the pilot training role, 216 was transferred to BFC Valcartier, QC where it remained in service with 430 Sqn in the observer role until its retirement in 1995. After a period in storage, the helicopter was repainted in 403 Sqn markings and placed on display.
