Cow Creek is an engineered stream to help reduce possible erosion and damage to structures including a bridge where Oklahoma Highway 51 crosses the creek. Due to possible flooding the road crossing Cow Creek at this point becomes a spillway and gates at the east and west ends of the road are often closed due to high waters. The river level gauge at this spillway measures up to 9 feet above the road surface. Excessive vegetation debris is visible on the south side of the spillway. Nearby signs warn of possible folding and road closures.
Storms in 2019 which caused flooding in many areas caused Cow Creek to rise and create a potential washout of the nearby Highway 51 bridge over Cow creek. Roads in the area including this spillway were closed for weeks or more waiting for water to recede.
RIVER GAUGE INFORMATION: Gauge measures up to 9 feet above the roadbed and covers an area where the road narrows to a single lane. During rainstorms this section of the road becomes a spillway so caution crossing is crucial if the road has net been completely closed.
