El escudo de armas o emblema heráldico que posee cada población suele tener en la mayoría de los casos un significado en su concepción.
Es típico ver en los organismos oficiales y en las banderas oficiales el escudo de armas, pero en este caso, en la fachada del ayuntamiento no luce el escudo de la ciudad, sino un escudo que ya estaba en el edificio antes de ser ocupado por el Ayuntamiento.
Podría tratarse del linaje "Cordero" dados los corderos que están en el campo de gules y el castillo, donde hay una leyenda que dice así:
"El primero de este apellido del que se tiene noticia cierta, fue un caballero de la noble casa de los Novares, una de las más nobles y esclarecidas de Asturias, quien era guarda y alcaide de una importante fortaleza, desde la cual se hacía mucho daño a los moros vecinos. Por este motivo, los sarracenos le pusieron sitio y tras varios meses de asedio y librados fuertes combates, cn los que siempre fracasaron, se les ocurrió rendir a los sitiados por hambre.
Y esto fue entendido por el alcaide Novares, que quiso darles a entender lo equivocados que estaban, para lo cual ordenó que los dos últimos corderos que les quedaban les fueran entregados a los moros, a fin de mostrarles que la fortaleza estaba bien pertrechada de víveres, para poder continuar resistiendo el asedio.
Viendo los moros tal generosidad y como tampoco estaban sobrados de alimentos, entendieron que los del castillo los poseían de sobra, por lo que se determinaron a levantar el sitio, juzgando inútil seguir manteniéndolo.
Por esta acción de los dos corderos, el alcaide Novares decidió tomar este apellido que conservaron posteriormente todos sus descendientes."
