This bronze statue of a corpulent dock worker stands in a small park right next to the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam. It was created by Dutch sculptor Mari Andriessen and unveiled in 1952. It commemorates the February 25, 1941, strike by dock workers (and others) in protest of the German occupation of the Netherlands and, specifically, their deportation of Jews to forced labor camps which began a few days before. The general strike crippled the city for a few days but was violently suppressed by the German forces.
The stamp is one of a set of three issued in 1965 which show a progression of monuments from different parts of the Netherlands. Each monument is dedicated to a particular aspect of the Dutch resistance during World War II.
