A lo largo de la Costa Granadina se han levantado desde la antigüedad sistemas defensivos, predominando en número las torres vigías o atalayas, sobre las fortificaciones más grandes. Estos baluartes debían de servir tanto para repeler los ataques de las tropas enemigas, como para dar aviso a otros puntos de los peligros cercanos.
La Torre de Torrenueva, se emplazó en un punto estratégico, que controlaba el punto muerto existente entre el desaparecido castillo del Varadero de Motril y el Castillo de Carchuna.
Aunque se ha apuntado por diversos autores que esta torre es del siglo XVI, no es hasta el primer tercio del siglo XVIII, cuando aparece citada en diversos documentos. Las intervenciones arqueológicas realizadas en 2010 datan la construcción de la atalaya, entre finales del siglo XVII y el primer cuarto del siglo XVIII.
La torre es de planta circular, de casi 11 metros de altura, tiene un desarrollo ligeramente troncocónico. La base mide 5,78 metros de diámetro y se va reduciendo hasta llegar a los 4,6 metros de diámetro, en la parte superior. Está cimentada sobre un tambor cilíndrico de más de dos metros de profundidad, y construida en mampostería de lajas de tamaño mediano, trabadas con mortero de cal y arena.
La Torre Vigía de Torrenueva se divide en tres partes: el cuerpo macizo que son los dos tercios inferiores, la cámara o estancia, y la azotea.
La puerta ventana de acceso se encuentra al Sur, a 5,7 metros del suelo. Es un vano rectangular, realizado de ladrillos de casi un metro y medio de alto por casi un metro de ancho. Encima de la puerta-ventana se encuentra una ladronera con matacanes, que defendía la vertical de la puerta.
La estancia principal es de reducidas dimensiones, apenas 2,22 metros de diámetro por 3 metros de altura. Se encuentra cubierta por una bóveda de media naranja, realizada de ladrillos.
La estancia tiene una chimenea en un lateral, para hacer las señales de rebato, mientras que en el otro flanco cuenta con una ventana de desarrollo abocinado hacia el interior y arco de medio punto. Desde aquí se abre el vano de acceso a la escalera, de 12 peldaños, que permite la subida a la azotea de planta circular.
La terraza cuenta con un peto protector, de más de un metro de alto, que dispone de 3 troneras.
La Torre Vigía de Torrenueva, comunicaba al Oeste con la Torre del Varadero y al Este con la Torre del Chucho, ambas desaparecidas. Contaba para las labores de vigilancia con 1 cabo de torres y 2 torreros. Debía de tener constantemente un centinela de día y de noche, que era el encargado de hacer las señales de seguridad. Estos torreros estaban apoyados en tierra por seis soldados de Infantería, sin artillería. En 1839 este baluarte fue ocupado por los Carabineros.
La Torre Vigía de Torrenueva esta inscrita como Bien de Interés Cultural (B.I.C.) desde junio de 1985.

The base measures 5.78 meters in diameter and gradually reduces until it reaches 4.6 meters in diameter at the top. It is founded on a cylindrical drum more than two meters deep, and built in masonry of medium-sized flagstones, locked with lime and sand mortar.
The Torrenueva Watchtower is divided into three parts: the solid body, which is the lower two thirds, the chamber or room, and the roof.
The access window door is to the south, 5.7 meters above the ground. It is a rectangular opening, made of bricks, almost a meter and a half high by almost a meter wide. Above the window-door is a thief with machicolations, which defended the vertical of the door.
The main room is small, just 2.22 meters in diameter by 3 meters high. It is covered by a semicircular vault, made of bricks.
The room has a chimney on one side, to make the alarm signals, while on the other flank it has a window with a flared development towards the interior and a semicircular arch. From here the access opening to the 12-step staircase opens, which allows access to the circular roof terrace.
The terrace has a protective breastplate, more than a meter high, which has 3 loopholes.
The Watchtower of Torrenueva communicated to the West with the Torre del Varadero and to the East with the Torre del Chucho, both of which have disappeared. It had 1 tower corporal and 2 keepers for surveillance work. It must have constantly had a sentinel day and night, who was in charge of making security signals. These keepers were supported on the ground by six infantry soldiers, without artillery. In 1839 this bastion was occupied by the Carabineros.
The Watchtower of Torrenueva has been registered as an Asset of Cultural Interest (B.I.C.) since June 1985.
