The topic of the Olympic games is no stranger to postage stamps, especially those issued by the host country. Leading up to the 1960 Rome Olympics, Italy released over a dozen Olympic-themed stamps. Several of these portrayed venues to be used during the games such as the large Palazzo dello Sport and its diminutive cousin, the Palazzetto dello Sport, both built specifically for 1960 games.

The Palazzetto dello Sport hosted all the weightlifting events and the lion’s share of the basketball competition during the 1960 Olympics. Both weightlifting and basketball were dominated that year by the United States and the Soviet Union. The U.S. basketball team took the gold medal with a kind of pre-Dream Team dream team which included such future NBA stars as Jerry West, Jerry Lucas and Oscar Robertson. The Soviet Union took the silver medal in basketball but won gold medals in five of the seven weightlifting events and a silver in a sixth. The United States equaled their weightlifting medal count, but with only one gold, four silver and a bronze.
