The small town of Ellon is situated some twenty miles to the north of the city of Aberdeen in north-east Scotland. The Episcopalians first worshipped in the area in a chapel at Craighall, then outside the town, until 1816. In 1871 a new building, designed by George Edmund Street, a renowned Victorian architect, was opened on June 23rd that year and consecrated on September 8th 1875.

The church was designed to resemble the old medieval parish church of Ellon which was pulled down in 1776, and is designed in a 13th century style with a steeply pitched roof, aligned west to east with a chancel, nave, narthex, and spirelet towards the north-east corner.

A schoolroom and parsonage were designed by William Butterfield in 1856, but were sold in 1976, with a new rectory and hall built close by. The church can be found on South Road to the east of the junction of the A920 and B9005, south of the bridge over the River Ythan heading out of the town centre. The church is linked with St James the Less at Cruden Bay.
