With rows and rows of uniform but odd-shaped cenotaphs, Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC is no stranger to unusual markers. But this one is truly striking. The metal sculpture, named ‘Endless Curve’ was placed above the gravesite of Tom Foley, former Congressman from Spokane, Washington, who died in 2013. There are plans to add a granite marker with the sculpture on top of it sometime in the future, but as of this writing, that hasn’t happened yet. In lieu of the forthcoming headstone, there’s a small sign that reads ‘Those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us every day. * Forever In Our Hearts * Thomas Stephen Foley * 1929-2013.’

Unlike the hundreds of cenotaphs for congressmen whose actual remains are buried in their home districts, this is Foley’s actual gravesite. Perhaps he felt more at home with his political cronies in Washington DC than with his constituency in Washington state. Foley served in the U.S. House of Representatives for thirty years (1965-1995), the last six of which as Speaker of the House. But he was voted out of office in a successful campaign to ‘de-Foley-ate’ Congress in 1994. Afterwards, President Bill Clinton appointed him to various positions including U.S. Ambassador to Japan (1997-2001).

The Congressional Cemetery is open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on weekdays but is closed on the weekends. There is no admission charge.
