After 107 full years, Doris Mary King passed away Saturday, August 23, 2014. Born in London in 1907 to Tom and Ellen Pocock, Doris lived through a century of struggles, progress, and changes in England, in the United States, and around the world. She saw the end of the Victorian era and the beginning of the space age, the introduction of electricity and automobiles, and the invention of the telephone, television, rocket ships, and computers. Living in London through two world wars, she forged her strength and character through pluck, determination, steadfastness, and faith. She was beloved by many and a faithful friend to most. As a member of the Grail Society, she knew and frequently expressed her certainty that physical life on Earth is only a short time in which we learn what we need to learn before moving on. When she moved to Edmond in 1977, Doris virtually started her life over, singing in the choir of the First United Methodist Church and serving as an officer in the AARP, volunteering as a “pink lady” at the hospital, baking cakes for every occasion, even learning to drive. Her lovely trained voice blessed many a worship service and special occasion, and she continued to sing until age 107. Doris is survived by sons Richard King, of Leagrave, England, and Eric King, of Edmond, Oklahoma. She is also survived by grandchildren Bryan, Brad, and Cory King, and by Marion Auker, Sue King, and Jo Sear in England, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and other kinfolk, both here and in the United Kingdom. Doris loved music, family, chocolate, hugs, baking, and a proper cup of tea. She also loved the Lord, whom she served her entire life. She attributed her long life to good genes, heavenly blessings, hard work, and her lifelong habit of taking a few minutes each afternoon to “put her feet up.” She taught those who knew her many life lessons and leaves behind an impressive list of people for whom she has been a mentor, teacher, and friend. The family thanks all of you who encountered her for your kindness, affection, and care for Mum. A special thank-you is due her dear friends Esther Hansen, Carol Woods, Banu Bilen, Kathy Mires, Philomena Hollingsworth, and the kind staff at Companion Hospice. You meant so much to her. Doris made her home in England for many years; then she made her home in Edmond for many more; now, though she makes her home beyond our sight, she remains in our heart. The funeral service will take place at 10:30am, Friday, August 29 at Baggerley Funeral Home in Edmond. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Grail Movement, Predisan, or the choir of Edmond First United Methodist Church.
