EN: "The mission, as was customary, had at the beginning a temple of perishable materials. In fact, throughout the years that the missionaries occupied this site, they never erected a durable building. For that reason the present precinct dates from the first years of the XX century. As for the ornamentation of this temple, the existing documents speak that it was poorly decorated, with scarce paintings and also with liturgical service vestments in process of deterioration because it was old and very used. Of the little that was preserved is a gilded silver chalice with the marks of the Mexican Mint and of the goldsmith Herrera, who worked there between 1882 and 1889. There are also several record books that are part of the ecclesiastical archives, as well as a curious bell with a long belly that hangs in the bell tower.
The Jesuits placed two of their California missions under the patronage of St. Joseph; one of them is this one and the other is Comodú. This circumstance was due to the request of the Marquis of Villapuente, who financed the foundation of the two missions."
