Work on the park, the former site of a quarry, began in 1939. The completion of the landscaping would have been a major milestone worthy of commemoration. The arboretum mentioned on the plaque was started in 1949. Junior Forest Wardens planted the first trees at that time. The arboretum has around 1,500 trees now. Most are native species, but there are also Persian silk trees, Japanese cherry trees, ginkgo trees, European beeches, and Japanese katsura.
