This obelisk can be found on a walking trail in McDonald Park, an area of woodlands and park to the north of the town centre of Ellon, some twenty miles north of the Scottish city of Aberdeen.

Ellon native James Gordon McDonald gifted the park to the town in 1928, and this is commemorated on the base of the obelisk which is of pink rough hewn granite and ten foot tall.

The inscription on the obelisk reads as follows:

'McDONALD PARK
THIS PARK WAS PRESENTED
TO THE BURGH OF ELLON IN 1928 BY
JAMES GORDON McDONALD OF RHODESIA
IN MEMORY OF HIS FATHER & MOTHER
HUGH & JOHANNA McDONALD
WHO LIVED WITHIN SIGHT OF THIS MONUMENT
FOR OVER SIXTY YEARS
THEY LONG DESIRED TO SEE ELLON IN
POSSESSION OF A PLEASURE GROUND AND
THAT WISH HAS NOW BEEN ACHIEVED'

The obelisk can be reached by walking west from Golf Road along the southern edge of McDonald Golf Course, where it stands in the centre of the path.
