A topical stamp collection is a collection of stamps that have a common theme or subject such as trains or ships or butterflies, etc. These could end up being quite large and challenging. But if you decided to collect stamps with the subject of water treatment plants, you might end up with a collection of just this one stamp.
In 2011, Canada Post issued a set of five stamps commemorating Art Deco design. Each stamp showed a detail of a building built in the 1930s from five different provinces. Making the cut was the R. C. Harris plant in Toronto. This large facility processes water from Lake Ontario providing clean drinking water for the city. Opened in 1941, it’s still fully functional providing 30% of Toronto’s total water supply.
The building was designed by Thomas C. Pomphrey and named for Roland Caldwell Harris, longtime commissioner of Toronto's public works. It has been named a national historic civil engineering site and an Ontario Heritage property. Besides appearing on this stamp, the R. C. Harris plant has appeared in several movies including ‘Strange Brew’ and ‘Half Baked.’
