Between the 8th and 13th centuries, monasteries were often centres of learning and monks, especially with their knowledge and level of understanding, contributed greatly to the care of the population. Garden work and the cultivation of medicinal plants and the production of medicinal preparations from them were an important activity of the Benedictine order at that time. The medicinal plant garden was often a separate part of the monastery gardens. The Benedictine Order is very closely linked to the cult of the garden. The Benedictine Order is particularly responsible for the spread and establishment of vegetable and herb gardens. The monks who were called to help the poor grew the necessary medicinal herbs in their monastery gardens for this purpose. They were able to make use of the gifts of nature and used a variety of herbs for human ailments or those of domestic animals. The monks were able to make various remedies from the herbs they cultivated, and people often sought help from them. The monks contributed a great deal to herbal healing, and so remarkable works on medicinal herbs and recipes were produced in the monasteries at that time. In front of the monastery church there was often a small representative garden with evergreen shrubs. The most extensive areas with various types of kitchen gardens were usually located together with the orchard north of the church. The size of these gardens exceeded the representative parts of the monastery.
