The artwork was designed by local artist Dave Salt and is located in the underpass that leads to High Street(East) and Barracks Road (West) from the sunken garden at Newcastle’s Grosvenor roundabout.

The report about the underpass by Aimi Redfern appeared on StokeonTrent Live on 24th June 2021, and reads as follows;

"The underpass in Newcastle features artwork by a local artist

Work to revamp a town centre pedestrian subway is almost complete.

Local artist Dave Salt has designed the artwork being installed in the underpass off the sunken garden at Newcastle’s Grosvenor roundabout.

The colourful mural draws on sculptures situated on roundabouts in the borough, including the bee and buzzard from the town centre, the cyclists at Whitmore and the snowdrops at Clayton.

It is the second of the sunken garden’s five passages to be redecorated as part of a project to improve seven subways in the town. The first featured artwork depicting local landmarks by Madeley-based artist Elizabeth Taylor.

They will also have CCTV and new lighting installed to make them brighter, safer and more appealing to shoppers.

The subways and sunken roundabout have been blighted by crime and anti-social behaviour in recent years. Issues have included drug-taking, street drinking, begging and fighting.

Pedestrians were impressed with the latest design.

Trevor Miles, aged 74, of Newcastle, said: “It looks lovely. It’s light and bright and looks welcoming.

“The last time it was done was a number of years ago and it did need doing again. A lot of people don’t like walking though the subways. I think it’s first class.”

Roy Gilmore, aged 84, of Clayton, said: “It is very nice. It’s good to walk down here and see something cheerful for a change. I hope it stays this way and doesn’t get vandalised.”

All the designs used in the project are inspired by the town’s Britain in Bloom campaign.

Murals depicting positive messages are being painted on entrance and exit walls to the subways.

The £285,000 project is being funded as part of a £1 million grant awarded to Newcastle from the Advanced Town Deal Fund, which must be spent on town centre regeneration and economic growth.

The tiles have been designed and manufactured by Brindley Ford-based firm Digital Ceramics."
