Kingston Colored School
The Kingston Colored School was the first public elementary school building for African Americans in Kingston, Tennessee. Built in 1934, the two-classroom school served students in grades one through eight until 1965. In 1963 the school's name was changed to Greenwood School. In accordance with Title IV of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Roane County Board of Education passed a resolution desegregating its public schools in August 1964. The following year Greenwood School closed. This marker stands here today as a monument to the twentieth century Civil Rights Movement.
