The natural center of the city, in its present form, was established in the last decades of the 16th century by relocating the original square close to the entrance of the castle.
The current Mikulov Square and city center were built at the end of the 16th century during the extensive reconstruction of Mikulov following a major fire. The devastating fire broke out on September 14, 1584, and claimed over 350 houses.
During the first half of the 17th century, a number of Renaissance houses were built here, many of which have remained relatively unchanged to this day.
Among the more notable ones are the House of the Knights with sgraffito decoration and the so-called Kanovnický House. The square is adorned with a fountain featuring a statue of Pomona with a cornucopia from the early 18th century, as well as the monumental Baroque Holy Trinity Sculpture from 1723-1724. The historic medieval core of the city has been declared a conservation area.
