Designed for speed and distance, #3001 was one of the most advanced steam locomotives ever made. It served in freight and passenger service along the New York Central’s water level route right up until the end of the steam era in 1957. The 4-8-2 wheel arrangement was a favorite of the NYC which operated about 600 of them at one time or another. Although normally called ‘Mountains,’ the NYC named them ‘Mohawks’ after the Mohawk River in New York.
Unfortunately, almost all of the New York Central’s steam locomotives were scrapped. Only two of their 4-8-2s still survive: #2933 at the National Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, and this one at the National New York Central Museum in Elkhart, IN.
