The castle above the confluence of the Olšava and Koménka rivers near Bojkovice was built around 1480 by the brothers Ctibor and Jaroslav of Landštejn to take over the role of Starý Svetlov. This was an important strategic location on the border between Moravia and present-day Slovakia. The castle was not large at that time, likely consisting of a small palace with a single tower. In 1527, the castle was sold to Burian of Vlcnov, whose family, however, became extinct by the sword. In the 16th century, the castle frequently changed owners. One of the more significant owners was Katerina of Vlcnov, who had it greatly expanded and fortified. The castle underwent another reconstruction at the end of the 16th century under the Tetour family of Tetov, transforming it from a Gothic style to Renaissance. It then changed owners again and was besieged several times by Turkish or Kuruc forces but was never conquered.
In 1803, the estate was purchased by Žofie Haugvicová of Biskupice, during which time the castle became a significant cultural center, attracting leading artists of the time. Her daughter Jindriška married the industrialist Larisch-Mönich, who had the castle rebuilt into a Tudor Gothic-style chateau. You may find it familiar as it strongly resembles the famous Miramare Castle, the residence of Archduke Maximilian I of Habsburg near Trieste, Italy. During the same period, the southern part of the game park was transformed into an English-style park. Within it stood subtropical greenhouses, where tropical fruits ripened even during winter, which was unprecedented at the time.
In the twentieth century, the castle changed owners frequently, with most of them unable to maintain the estate, leading to their bankruptcy. Currently, the castle is owned by the company BESS BUILDING, which renovated it in 2011. The main courtyard was transformed into a music and theater arena with a roof, where various cultural events, weddings, and celebrations take place throughout the year. The castle also houses a restaurant and hotel.
