Above the crosses is a glass cabinet containing some WWI trench art. A communion set consisting of a wooden cross, a brass chalice, and two brass paten. A framed description below explains:
A Souvenir of the European
War, 1914-1918 |
Presented to Finsthwaite Church by
the Rev. R. D. Davies, M.A. (Hon. C.F.) |
The Cross and Communion Vessels herin enclosed are
of interest, in that they were made "On Active
Service" in a mobile workshop by the 1037 G.H.Q. Reserve
M.T Company, for their use at Treviso, N. Italy on
Christmas Day, 1918. They were also used at the
Advanced Operating Centre at Croatia and at an Aero-
drome near Thiene.
The Vessels were originally shells, the Chalice the
cap of an 18 pounder. The larger paten a 45 Howitzer
and the smaller a three inch Austrian Berndorf shell.
The Cross is made from a plank of the Pontoon
Bridge built to carry the troops across the River Piave
for the final attack on the Italian front which led to the
Armistice in 1918.
