A plaque at the site reads: "This church began in 1908 by a small group of Japanese Christians. IN 1926 the building was constructed and dedicated as the Japanese Church of Christ. Later the church adopted its new name of El Estero Presbyterian Church.
Starting in the late 1920s and 1930s, the area surrounding the church became a Japanese residential neighborhood, primarily the home of Japanese fishermen from the sardine, salmon and abalone industries. The area was the largest Japantown in Monterey County before the onset of World War II. Between 1942 and 1945 during World War II, the Japanese community was evacuated to internment camps and they didn't not hold their worship services at the church.
Generations of Monterey Peninsular families have attend El Estero Presbyterian church. Between 1926 andf 1952, the church's beautiful original stained glass windows were installed. This church is one of the oldest Asian institutions serving the community on Monterey Peninsula."
