The German pilot floated ashore near the Bay" on August 22, 1940. . He was dressed in German aviation gear and in his pockets were found the identification documents issued to a 23-year-old naval officer. After contact with German authorities, it emerged that it was about Lieutenant Günter Mehrens in the German navy. The German was later buried with military honors in the New Cemetery where the coffin was wrapped in the German swastika flag. The tombstone still stands out in the cemetery today.
