"The church probably dates from the 10th-11th centuries and was built in the Romanesque style giving its name to the town that formed around it. Giovanni Villani and Ricorno Malispini (13th century) cite it as already existing in 1078, when the second circle of walls In 1293, the Florentine nobles met in this church and decided to oppose the "regulations of justice" of Giano Della Bella, which deprived them of all interference in the government of the state.

The church was also known because its previous one, on July 25, the feast of San Jacopo (as the apostle San Giacomo Maggiore was called in Florence), organized the Palio dei Navicelli on the Arno at its own expense. In fact, in the afternoon, since 1250, the boatmen disputed the typical "regatta" in the stretch of water between the Ponte Vecchio and the Santa Rosa reservoir by force of vigorous blows of the pole. the bed on which the apse of the church still stands out on the characteristic projections, which the Florentines affectionately call the "church of the donkey in the Arno" because in times of flood when the level of the river rises, the waters are impetuous to wet its apsidal part that can be seen from the Santa Trinita bridge."
