Font of fossiliferous marble in St Peter's church, Finsthwaite.
A drum type font with moulded turning near the top rim. Polished to highlight the nature of the stone.
This is not a true marble as they do not contain fossils, but 'fossilised marbles' can contain preserved remains, or fossils, of various species of the ammonites and the nautilus. These fossils look similar in appearance to large snails, mollusk shells, or corals.
The church was built in 1873–74 to replace a chapel dating from 1724 to 1725. It was paid for by Thomas Newby Wilson of Newby Bridge, the proprietor of the Stott Park Bobbin Mill.
The furnishings of the church were designed by the architects, Paley and Austin (
