"Purchased in 1568 by Cardinal Marco Sittico Altemps, the palace now has its original 16th-century appearance thanks to a recent restoration carried out by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. In the rooms, still partly decorated with frescoes, you can admire Greek and Roman sculptures belonging to various families of the Roman nobility in the 16th and 17th centuries. The palace houses core collections of classical remains, among which the famous Boncompagni Ludovisi collection stands out, made up of a notable amount of precious ancient marble, the collection of sculptures of Cardinal Altemps, the works collected by the Mattei family, initially intended to adorn Villa Celimontana, and the Del Drago Collection, dating from the 17th century. Among the sculptures on display, you can admire the group of the suicidal Galatian with his wife, Orestes and Electra, Ares and the head of Juno and the famous Greek original from the 5th century BC. called “Ludovisi Throne”, from excavations carried out in said area. The Altemps Palace also houses a nucleus of the Egyptian collection of the National Roman Museum, which collects materials from the sanctuary of Isis and Serapis on the Field of Mars, as well as the remains of the excavations of the Syriac sanctuary of the Janiculum. The visit to the Palace takes place on two floors distributed around a beautiful courtyard decorated by a monumental fountain. Above the building is the viewpoint, a tower crowned by a rampant mountain goat, symbol of the Altemps family."
